The Unbearable Lightness of the Millennials’ Infatuation with Socialism

My hometown paper, the Miami Herald, has published an article from AP that documents how college-age millennials in our city are strongly attracted to socialism.

What makes this article more disturbing is that included in this group are Cuban-American immigrants whose parents fled the communist island.

Where do these young people look when they think of the socialism they would like to see realized in the U.S.?  You might have guessed it

Sweden.

Citing disturbing data from Pew Research, the author writes that socialism “is making particular inroads among millennials and Generation Z voters, who are expected to make up 37% of the 2020 U.S. electorate, according to the Pew Research Center.”

It is clear to me that these young millennials know very little about Sweden, or the other Scandinavian countries for that matter.  But who can blame them? Neither do the people whom they look up to, Bernie Sanders and AOC.
